About Tabehako

What is Tabehako?

Tabehako offers Japanese snacks & goods curated with Muslims in mind.

What does Muslim-friendly mean?

Japan is home to more snacks than you can enjoy in a lifetime, but unfortunately most of these indulgements are not halal. All Tabehako products are free from non-halal ingredients.

Please note that not all of our products are halal-certified, as there are very few Japanese products with halal certification. Instead, we handpick everything and check all ingredients and confirm with the manufacturer when needed. This also means that if the manufacturer decides to change the ingredients of a certain product, we might not offer these products in the future again if non-halal ingredients are added in the process.

Please note that our selected items may be produced in factories that also produce non-halal products. Please do not use our services if you only consume products that are halal certified.

What allergen information does Tabehako provide?

Tabehako provides allergen information for included items on our Site, based on the ingredient list of the item at the point of writing. Please note that this information does not mean that it is free from cross-contamination, as these items may be produced in factories with products that do contain allergens. Please assess your own situation in regards to any allergies, and refrain from using our services if cross-contamination may affect your health.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery has compiled a list of 27 common allergen ingredients, of which only 7 are required to be indicated on food packaging. Therefore we may only able to provide up until the seven common allergens in most cases. We cannot guarantee that these are the only allergens present for the specified item.

  • Seven required allergens: Wheat, crab, eggs, dairy, peanuts, shrimp, buckwheat.
  • Twenty recommended allergens (not always included): Abalone, apple, banana, beef, cashew nuts, chicken, gelatin, kiwi, mackerel, matsutake mushroom, orange, peach, pork, salmon, salmon roe, sesame, soy, squid, walnut, yam.
Tabehako donates to charity, what does that mean?

We believe everything tastes better when shared. That’s why your box is curated such that you can share it with your loved ones.

But most importantly, from an Islamic perspective, we believe that we should try to do good wherever we can. With our “Snack Well, Do Well” principle, why donate 2.5% of each box sold to charity on Eid Ul-Fitr every year. We select a new donation destination every year, with Palestine for Eid Ul-Fitr 2023.

There are other Japanese snacks boxes, what makes Tabehako special?

First and most importantly: we’re completely Muslim-friendly. Tabehako is Muslim-owned, so we do our due diligence in researching our snacks and periodically contacting the manufacturers to inquire whether there has been a change in ingredients.

Not only do we offer halal snacks, we always pair your snacks with unique household items, Japanese drinks/teas, and a beautiful reusable furoshiki Japanese traditional cloth with every box.

Second, we donate to charity on Eid Ul-Fitr with each box sold. We believe that everything tastes better when shared, and therefore work with the “Snack Well, Do Well” principle.

Thirdly, no subscription needed. You do not have to buy a subscription to try out Japanese snacks. There are many people who would just like to try out Japanese snacks once, and that’s fine.

And lastly, we’re not only working towards doing good to humanity (donating to charity), we also strive to be as sustainable as possible. We focus on sustainable and reusable packaging, such as using traditional Japanese furoshiki wrapping instead of bubble wrap (which is an extra item for our customers to enjoy as well!), and to share our monthly guide online instead of printing a booklet every month.

What is the Moshi Moshi Box?

The Tabehako Original is a monthy themed Japanese snack and goodie box featuring traditional and modern Japanese snacks and sweets, Japanese tea, and home goods. With each box you’ll receive 20-25 items that make up for an indulgent balance.

You will also receive an online guide with your The Original Tabehako box, in which you can learn more about the snacks you’re about to enjoy. Alternatively, you can visit our website to see what will come with the upcoming month’s The Tabehako Original.

Can I request a custom box?

If you need a customized box, whether that’s for dietary reasons or if you’d like to gift a box to your business partner, you can contact us via our contact form, and we’ll see how we can help you.

Until when should I consume the snacks?

Some traditional Japanese snacks naturally have a quicker date of expiry. At the time of shipping, the items Tabehako ships out have at least two months left until expiry.

Tabehako recommends enjoying your snacks within two months of notice of shipment.
